SERVICE PROGRAM
COMMUNITY
SPEAKING OUT ABOUT OUR FAITH AND VALUES
Our council has a tradition of delivering a message to the community about our faith and values through the use of public billboards. Our tradition began by posting a annual billboard in December 1994 during the Christmas Holidays. A few years latter we expanded our tradition by posting an additional billboard in the Spring during the Easter season. In May 2001 we expanded our program again by posting a billboard with a pro-life message.
The true meaning of Christmas seems to get lost with all the commercials and advertising promoting the material and money side of Christmas. "What do you want as gifts? What did you get? Do you have your shopping done yet? How much did you spend?" These are common subjects of conversation during the season. We speak of being ready in the sense of "do you have all your shopping done?" or "do you have all the cards sent out?". Our council tries to remind the community and ourselves of the significance of Christmas as we hurry up and down our streets. We put up an billboard with a reminder "Keep Christ in Christmas." What is more important than celebrating the birth of Jesus and our salvation?
The death of Jesus on the Cross and his resurection on Easter Sunday is essential to our faith and salvation. During the Easter Season our council posts a billboard along a major street to proclaim to the community the love and peace of Christ. The billboard depicts the risen Christ and displays the mesage "Peace be to You."
The Knights of Columbus has a historic commitment to be unconditionally pro-life. At every level it strives to meet the call of Pope John Paul II, in Evangelium Vitae, that the Catholic people become "the people of life and the people for life" and they "activate a great campaign in support for life." As part of our council's program to speak out to the community about the values taught by our faith, we post a billboard along a major street to proclaim a pro-life message. The billboard recognizes mothers for choosing Life and encourages others to do so. The billboard depicts children with the message "Mom was pro-life. Thank her today!" In honor of Mothers we post the billboard during the month of May.
